A Recognition of Safety Achievement Award was presented to the Mount Carmel Area School District during the school board meeting on June 19th 2008. Mr. Gary DeFlorentis, Director of Producer Relations & Risk Management for the Pennsylvania School Boards Association Insurance Trust explained that the district had met all recommendations of the insurance trust within a very short period of time. In October of 2007, a risk assessment was done at the district’s facilities by members of the PSBA Insurance Trust. DeFlorentis told the board that the list of recommendations given to Janis Venna, district business manager, was relatively short compared to other districts in the state. He was impressed at how quickly all corrective measures were implemented at Mount Carmel Area. As a result, the district will receive a significant reduction in its insurance premium for the coming fiscal year. DeFlorentis also stated that complying with the recommendations ensures the safety of students, employees, and the general public when using district facilities. Mount Carmel Area is one of only 25 districts in the state to have received the award since its inception in 2005. DeFlorentis praised the school board, administration, and Mrs. Venna for taking a proactive approach to safety issues.
