Daily Study Slides for PSSA's
by Gabby George
The newest addition to the WKMC web page is the Word of the Day PowerPoint. The presentation features words from MCA Live’s PSSA Word of the Day segment. Don’t have PowerPoint? There is a link here for a free downloadable version. This version will allow you to view and save the PowerPoint. It is important to do your best on the PSSA’s for a number of reasons. In the long run, how you do affects our school’s day-to-day activities. The better we do on the test, the more likely additional extracurricular activities and field trips are made available for students. Prospective colleges and employers may look at how well your school has performed on the PSSA’s. Younger students will need to pass a form of the PSSA’s in order to receive a high school diploma. Although we sometimes complain about standardized tests, how well we do benefits us all and you might just win some special prizes this year.

Victims of Pa Floods can suffer from depression
This past September floods have affected many people in surrounding Counties. The flooding has ruined basements, schools, and roads across the state. Besides giving people a basement full of water, the flood has also given many people, PTSD.
PTSD stands for post traumatic stress disorder, a disorder after experiencing something extremely overwhelming, or frightening, such as a natural disaster. Even though the flooding happened over a month ago, there is still a lot of damage and much cleanup to do. These day to day reminders can really take a toll on emotions. Some of the symptoms you may experience are nightmares, emotional distress, feeling hopeless, and avoiding places where the traumatic event occurred. If you have PTSD, you’re not alone. More

New Bike Club Funded through HIGHMARK Healthy High 5 Grant
by Kirsten Sinopoli
Mt. Carmel Area has recently received a $48,000.00 challenge grant from HIGHMARK high 5. The HIGHMARK foundation was founded in 2000 to make progress toward health, well-being, and quality of life to those supported by the group. The foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations and hospitals that strive to improve community health. The grant money was awarded to Mount Carmel Area to increase physical activity through mountain biking while learning proper nutritional habits to improve cardiovascular health. The grant will fund Project Spin, Sparking Physical Initiative and Nutrition.
The school has purchases 26 bikes to be used during gym classes and after school. Students in grades 7 through 12 participate in mountain biking. The students must choose the proper size bike that fits them along with a proper fitting helmet. The bikes also come with mounting pieces that allow them to become stationary. During winter, when it is too cold and snowy to ride the bikes outside, students can ride them in the gym or in a stationary position. In spring, students will be able to take the bikes outside and ride them on the school premises with teacher supervision. Eventually a bike trail will become part of the program for students and the community.
As part of this grant, the school district has also introduced a Bike Club advised by Mr. Kevin Wagner. High school students in the club meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in the high school gym from 2:30 to 3:00 PM. The club is also available to the community on Tuesday nights from 6:00 to 6:45 PM. For more information, contact the district office or see Mr. Wagner in the gym.
